The chip

This chip is a commercially available organ-on-a-chip system supplied to us by the company Micronit. It consists of three layers; the top, middle and bottom layer, as one can see down below. These three layers are structured in such a way that when assembled correctly, they form two flow chambers separated by the membrane of the middle layer. This allows for two different fluids / gasses to pass alongside the membrane. The cells are cultured onto the membrane of the middle layer. To seed the cells onto the membrane we're using a self constructed seeder.

Once the cells have attached to the membrane, the middle layer is taken out of the seeder and put into the chip holder following the procedure shown down below. Once this is done, the pumping mechanism is turned on and the medium is pumped through the system on both sides of the membrane creating the shear stress.
